Jan McBarron is a native of Philadelphia. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, cum laude, and after practicing her profession in the operating room for several years, decided to become a physician. While continuing to work as a nurse, she returned to school to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology, again cum laude, which gained her admission into medical school.
Receiving a Doctor of Medicine Degree at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, she served her medical-surgical internship there as well. Initially she practiced family medicine with some focus on Bariatrics (weight control). Eventually Bariatrics encompassed all of her time. This was almost a natural progression as Dr. McBarron herself had suffered a tremendous weight problem. (She has lost over 70 pounds and has kept it off!)
She was named "Woman of Achievement-1989" by the Girl Scouts and was chosen to serve on the Board of Directors. She also is a Professor at Columbus State University, where she teaches several courses on nutrition and weight management. In addition, she writes two newspaper columns and has appeared on numerous radio and TV interviews. She has authored several books, including the Columbus Nutrition Program, which has been featured in dozens of magazines, including Good Housekeeping and Better Homes and Gardens. Dr. McBarron was selected as a nutrition expert and consultant for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
Since 1985 Dr. McBarron has been a member in good standing of the American Medical Association, the American Medical Women's Association, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the Georgia Medical Association, and the Muscogee Medical Society.
Dr. McBarron has a thriving medical practice in Columbus, Georgia, where she helps thousands of patients reach and maintain their ideal weight. She is happily married to Duke Liberatore, owner of Peachtree Natural Foods, voted the best natural food store in the country for 1993. Together they form a dynamic team hosting their own prime time Radio show on health and preventive medicine called "Duke and the Doctor". It is the #1 rated Health talk show in the nation and is heard daily in over 125 markets. To find a station near you that airs the show, visit their website at www.dukeandthedoctor.com.
